Variable Fuzzy Sets Method for Flood Seasonality of Catchments

Abstract:Flood seasonality of a catchment is vitally important for flood resources utilization and flood control. Since the seasonality of flood is affected by many factors, it is with high uncertainty and fuzziness. How to describe its characteristics properly and exactly? Engineering variable fuzzy sets, an effective mathematics method to conduct fuzzy uncertainty analysis, has been newly established based on Zadeh traditional fuzzy sets in the recent ten years. In this paper, at first, we give some concerning research results of engineering variable fuzzy sets in detail. Then we propose a multi-criteria fuzzy recognition model based on engineering variable fuzzy sets and apply it to the seasonality of flood of Panjiakou catchment. The application results show that engineering variable fuzzy sets can describe the fuzzy attributes of flood seasonality scientifically and effectively, especially the attributes of opposite-unity and quantity-quality exchanging.
