Abstract:To explore a new type of basalt mineral fibers on the impact of asphalt mixture, fiber improving asphalt behavior was researched first. Through the test of asphalt mixture of three indicators with fiber content 0%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, and 0.6%, characteristics of composite materials (fiber asphalt) were analyzed based on Einsteins viscosity equation. The effect of different fiber content on the Marshall stability of asphalt mixture, the residual splitting strength and water stability of Marshalls was also researched. The research indicated that basalt fiber had a significant toughening effect on asphalt, and penetration and the softening point to evaluate fiber asphalt mixture's viscosity properties of composite materials was appropriate. MS and MS0 results showed that basalt mineral fibers in the AC-16C were not more than 0.4% volume. With the increase of fiber content, the splitting strength of the asphalt mixture increased. When content > 0.30%, increase was not obvious but modulus and stiffness continued to increase to resist deformation capacity. Composite micromechanics theory explained the basic principles of basalt mineral fibers to improve the behavior of asphalt mixture strength. ? 2010 ASCE.
