Abstract:A terpyridine-Zn2+ complex TpyZnS was synthesized and developed as a turn-off fluorescent probe for HClO in aqueous solution. The fluorescence intensity of TpyZnS dramatically decreased within 10 seconds in the presence of HClO. Additionally, the detection limit for HClO was found to be 0.16 mu M. It is proposed that oxidation of the thioether group in TpyZnS to the corresponding sulfoxide is probably responsible for the fluorescence quenching of TpyZnS. The possible sensing process was studied by H-1 NMR, HRMS spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, the probe TpyZnS was successfully employed in the detection of HClO in real water samples and bioimaging.
