Abstract:In this study, a strengthening material with laminated structure is designed, synthesized and tested. The AZ31/Cu laminated composite is fabricated by unique underwater explosive welding. Microstructure and mechanical characterization of the laminated composite are carried out via SEM, tensile and three-point bending test. Full crack propagating path during tensile and bending process is recorded to evaluate how laminated structure affects the fracture performance. Some damage modes of the laminated composite, including traverse crack, crack deflection, delamination, plastic deformation and brittle fracture are observed and investigated. The present study demonstrates that the laminated structure in AZ31/Cu composite has excellent damage tolerance due to the multiple fracture modes to activate energy-absorbing mechanisms. The exceptional mechanical property achieved by this research provides strengthening effect for all crack-resistant metal design.
