Highly Selective Synthesis of CO2 Copolymer from Styrene Oxide

A study was conducted to demonstrate highly selective synthesis of CO2copolymer from styrene oxide. The study explored the selective routes for the preparation of poly-(styrene carbonate) using cobalt(III) complexes containing Schiff base ligands as catalysts. The resulting polymer exhibited excellent thermal stability with a thermolysis temperature up to 300 °C, which was about 60 °C higher than that of the copolymer obtained with zinc glutarate as catalyst. The main-chain sequence of the resulting polycarbonate was confirmed by1H and13C NMR spectroscopy, along with MALDI-TOF. The resonance of methine CH in styrene carbonate unit was found at 5.87 ppm due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the aromatic ring in1H NMR spectrum of the resulting copolymer in CDCl3. MALDI-TOF spectroscopy also confirmed the highly alternating nature of the resulting polymer, while the13C NMR spectrum suggested that the copolymer had a head-to-tail content of 51%.
