Advanced Flame Retardant Magnesium-Based Materials: System Optimization Toward Enhanced Performance of Thermoplastic Elastomer

摘要:Advanced flame retardant magnesium-based compounds were systematically synthesized and their flame retardant performances on thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) system were compared. System optimization results showed that magnesium-based compounds can affect their flame retardant performances. The heat release rate of composites with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, basic magnesium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide sulfate decreased by 2.8, 31.4, 18.8 and 29.8% respectively compared with pure TPE. The ignition time of samples with adding magnesium-based compounds was prolonged. Among four kinds of magnesium-based compounds, magnesium hydroxide was the best flame retardant materials, owing to the formation of magnesium oxide layer and water vapor during thermal decomposition. This work demonstrated that magnesium hydroxide can be an excellent filler to significantly improve the flame retardant efficiency of polymers.
