Abstract:Alkylation of phenol with propylene over solid acid catalysts (HZSM-5) was studied using various silica/alumina ratios, H-Beta, H-USY, and -Al2O3. The zeolite structure significantly influenced the product distribution. Aside from shape selectivity taking effect in phenol alkylation with propylene over HZSM-5 zeolites, the acidic properties also influenced product distribution. H-ZSM-5 exchanged with different alkali metal ions, e..g, Na+ and Cs+ could apparently enhance the selectivity for p-iso-propylphenol due to the change of acidic properties. The acidic properties of the zeolites were characterized. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 13th International Zeolite Conference (Montpellier, France 7/8-13/2001).
