Abstract: By mixing an external-cavity diode laser, tunable in 1.5-1.6 m, and a Q switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.064 m in periodically poled lithium niobate, a continuously tunable difference frequency generation in 3.35-3.66 m wavelength region is realized. The difference frequency generator (DFG) has a narrow line width of less then 1 MHz and an average output power of 0.2 mW. Comparing with optical parametric oscillator the DFG has a simple and compact configuration and has no oscillation threshold. Based on the DFG a photoacoustic spectrometer for trace gas sensing has been constructed. With this system photoacoustic spectrums of 0.1% CH4 gas in different pressure has been recorded. The experiment demonstrates the features and the ability of the system for trace gas measurement.
