Abstract:Experimental tests were carried out to study the effect of heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of martensitic steel. Fatigue limits of the virgin and heat-treated martensitic steels were determined using the infrared thermography, achieving a good prediction. The external temperature increment was closely linked with the internal microstructural changes. The characteristics of the fracture surface were carefully observed by SEM, and accordingly it was found that fatigue cracks initiated from the specimen corner. The results show that the improvement of the mechanical properties of martensite was due to the formation of fine tempered martensite and second phase particles. ? 2012 American Scientific Publishers.
