Abstract:Large eddy simulation was used to characterize the in-cylinder turbulent flows and cycle-to-cycle variations. The analysis was conducted using different versions of SGS models, finite difference schemes for the convection term and grid density. By comparing with experiment data, it was shown that LES was a suitable method to study the highly transient turbulent flows; and the randomness, complexity and diversity of 3-D vortical flows could be captured efficiently. Besides this, LES was an ideal tool for studying the cycle-to-cycle variations in internal combustion engine.
