Abstract:Based on the ecological footprint theory, the resources and energy consumed by port was transformed into four types of productive land, namely cropland, forest, grassland and water area. A port ecological footprint model was built up by making good use of biological resources, energy and construction ecological footprints. Meanwhile, a port ecological capacity model was built up on the basis of port ecological deficit and ecological surplus. Finally, the ecological footprint and carrying capacity of a Northern China port was calculated, which led to an ecological deficit and 5.8 ecological capacity index in 2012 as well as unsustainable port ecology. As main source, the fossil energy ecological footprint occupied 95.3% of the port ecological footprint. All port ecological capacity derived from the port water area, which improved effectively its ecological carrying capacity and made the port ecological capacity index lower than that of the port city.
