Abstract:In this paper, a study of natural frequencies, modes and damping behavior of the free vibrations of delaminated composite plates is presented. The finite element analysis method and delamination model of laminated plates are performed by using the first-order shear deformation theory. A virtual interface element is developed to avoid the overlap and penetration between the upper and lower sublaminates at delamination region. Based on Adams' strain energy method, a damping model is applied for predicting the specific damping capacity (SDC) of the delaminated composite plates. From numerical results and discussion of some typical examples, it is clear that the effects of the location and area of the delamination on frequency, mode and specific damping capacity are significant, especially for high vibration modes. The method and numerical conclusion provided in the paper are valuable to clear understanding of dynamic behavior for the delaminated plates.
