Abstract: Based on a generalized strength criterion, a new method is presented to evaluate the ability of anti-frost-heave ability via the replacement of ground soil. Compared with the conventional methods, the criterion proposed is more reasonable since more factors are taken into account. The frost-heave force is considered as a kind of external load, and the defects of frozen soil are treated as cracks. The toughness of frozen soil, as an important factor, is introduced in the new criterion. A numerical example of a retaining wall is given to analyze the stability and strength before and after replacement.
