Abstract:Super hydrophobic phenomenon aroused great interest recently. The fabrication of metallic super hydrophobic surfaces is of great significance to many industrial areas as well as to science and technology development. A hierarchical structure with micro-nano-scales was fabricated on brass substrate by chemical etching in FeCl3-HCl-H2O solution. The structure consists of irregular pieces and fine papilla. After fluorination treating, the brass surface exhibits super hydrophobic properties, with a water contact angle of about 157 degrees and a contact angle hysteresis of about 5 degrees. The effect of etching time on the hydrophobicity of the surfaces was investigated. The results indicate that the etching time plays an important role on the formation of hierarchical roughness and on water contact angle. With the increase of etching time, the hierarchical structure gradually forms on the surface and the contact angle gradually increases until a constant value is reached. The contact angle hysteresis decreases as the contact angle increases. It was found that pure copper crystals appeared on the surface of brass. The formation of micro-nanostructures can be interpreted by dezincification mechanism of preferential solution of zinc and resolution-redeposition theory.
