Abstract:Nitinol alloys, with their good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, have been widely used for medical applications. How to analyze and evaluate their qualities has become a key problem that faces the designers. A method of constructing the material model for nitinol alloys in finite element method (FEM) was introduced in this paper. The self-expanding process of a nitinol stent was simulated by a commercial finite element code ANSYS. The results showed that FEM was well suitable for the simulation of nitinol appliances. It allows the designers quickly access his or her design and to iterate the design on a computer, which will be greatly helpful for the further use of nitinol alloys in biomedical fields.
