Abstract: Poly (L-lactic acid-co-α-alanine) copolymer, as one of biodegradable poly(ester-amide)s derived from L-lactic acid and α-alanine, was synthesized by direct melting copolymerization with stannous chloride and p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst system. The structure and properties of the obtained copolymers were measured via FT-IR, 13CNMR, GPC, DSC and XRD. With increasing of the content of α-alanine in feed, the data of copolymer molecular weight decreases, the diffraction and the melting peak disappear markedly. The hydrolytic degradation test indicated the resulting copolymer has an excellent degradability;its degradation rate could be enhanced by incorporating more α-phenylalanine into copolymer chain. It is suggested that the obtained copolymer is a potential biomedical material as drug coating on cardiovascular stent.
