Abstract: The selection of engineering materials involves a lot of knowledge. In this paper, the basic engineering material concepts and the relationships among concepts are analyzed in detail. A new ontology-based knowledge model for engineering materials is presented, which includes the engineering material ontologies, a set of tagged material instances and a rule base coded by using Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL). A material selection approach using the ontology-based knowledge model is proposed. This research is a new attempt to construct an open and shared knowledge system for engineering materials.
