Abstract:Rapid deflagration of flammable vapor cloud could lead to the occurrence of a so-called 'unconfined vapor cloud explosion'. The probability of an explosion, of course, is essential in the design of plants and on shore or offshore gas or oil exploration platform. The mechanisms that enhance explosion overpressures, therefore, need to be established with some certainty in order to ensure that all aspects of the safe design of structures and process and the safe protection of personnel are taken into account. An experimental investigation of the effect of two kinds of barriers ( semi-sphere porous and bar-shaped hemisphere barriers) on the explosion overpressure was conducted. A number of different barriers configurations were investigated to demonstrate the effects of the barriers parameters (size, void percentage, layer) on the overpressure. The results of these tests clearly show that barriers can lead to the production of damaging overpressure.
