Numerical study on gas bubbles motion in a reciprocally stirred flow

Abstract:A feasible approach to obtain the homogeneity of bubble diameter is using an air injector moving in reciprocating shift. This paper reports progress of movement and coalescence of two bubbles in a reciprocally stirred liquid field in the numerical simulations. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the volume-of fluid method for tracking the interface between the bubble and the flow and the surface tension force is modeled by a continuum surface force model. A dynamic mesh method is used to predict the bubble-melt flow in a two-dimensional foaming tank. Results indicate that if the upper bubble is small and the lower is big, then they tend to avoid each other. Otherwise they suffer coalescence and breakup after a certain time. The motion and merge behavior of the bubbles is dominantly influenced by the initial locations and the sizes of the bubbles as well as by the surface tension, while the reciprocating and liquid viscosity effect is insignificant. ? 2012 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
