Abstract:Microstructures and mechanical properties of as cast AZ31 withGe addition (0.4, 0.8 and1.6 wt-%) were investigated. The results show that the grain sizes of AZ31 with Ge addition were reduced by Ge element. The Mg(2)Ge precipitates distributed at grain boundaries and presented an irregular shape owning to the effect of Al or (and) Zn elements. Mg2Ge precipitates harm the tensile properties of the alloys. The failure model of the as cast alloys is the brittle intergranular fracture as well as that of AZ31.
