Abstract:Surface heat transfer coefficients for steel probes quenched in liquid quenchants were studied in this paper. 10 kinds of typical cylindrical steel probes were used during quenching experiments, and cooling curves of each steel probe quenched in various quenchants were measured. By inverse method, axisymmetric finite-difference models with phase transformations were developed to calculate temperature fields and surface heat transfer coefficients. Phase transformations are found to have a significant effect on the calculation of surface heat transfer coefficients. Surface heat transfer coefficients for the same steel probe quenched in different quenchants are different from each other. In addition, for the same quenchant, if the quenched steel probes are different, the calculated surface heat transfer coefficients are also different.
