WC coating on H13 steel surface prepared by electrospark deposition

Abstract:The surface of H13 steel was strengthened by electro-spark deposition (ESD) machine of model DZ-4000(III) with WC electrode in the argon medium. The microstructure, element distribution, hardness and surface roughness of strengthened coating is analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopic, energy-dispersive spectrum, X-ray diffraction and micro-hardness testing machine. The results show that excellent metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate is obtained by ESD. The coating had an average thickness of about 60   m. The microstructure of the coating is mainly composed of Fe3W3C phase, (CrFe)7C3 phase and W2C phase. The average micro-hardness of the coating is 1321.4 HV0.05 which is three times than that of the substrates.
