Abstract:The axial shortening of inertia friction weldment in ring form was influenced significantly by its geometric parameters. In this paper, an axisymmetric model of inertia friction welding process was established. By using finite element method of large elastic-plastic deformation, the effects of GH4169 alloy ring radius and thickness on the axial shortening of inertia friction weldment were simulated. For a given ring thickness, the axial shortening increased with the increasing of the ring radius and then decreased with it. As the ring radius was given, the axial shortening decreased rapidly with the increasing of the ring thickness until it was higher than a critical value. The calculated data of axial shortening during welding were in good agreement with the measured data. The simulation results provided a useful guidance in weld parameter development.
