Abstract: Considered the piston set-cylinder liner as a coupled component, using numerical simulation method, the effects were studied adding with nanolevel particulate of Cu in lube oil and cooling water separately for enhancing piston set-cylinder liner heat transfer and compared with the original engine. The numerical results show that both Cu-oil and Cu-water nanofluids can evidently enhance piston set-liner heat transfer capability, and the enhancement becomes increasing while increasing the concentration of nano-particles. For the piston, the enhancement of heat transfer by applying Cu-oil nanofluid is greater than applying Cu-water nanofluid. The temperatures at bowl center point a and squish lip point b, piston top outer edge point c, and first piston ring upper edge point d are averagely decreased about 28.4, 21.7, 22.8 and 27.7 K respectively, when using 5%(volumetric concentration) Cu-oil nanofluid. For the liner, only applying Cu-water nanofluid exhibits the best capability of enhancing heat transfer and the temperature of the upper edge point e of liner cylinder hole is averagely reduced about 10.4 K when using 5% (volumetric concentration) Cu-water nanofluid.
