Abstract:This paper presents a 3D numerical model based on arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) and adaptive remeshing techniques to study the mechanism of friction stir welding. Results indicate that the material flow on the advancing side and the flow on the retreating side are different. The material on the retreating side never rotates around the pin. But the material on the advancing font side of the weld forms the fluidized bed around the pin and then sloughs off in the wake. The material in front of the pin moves upwards, then is forced to rotate around the pin. Behind the pin, the material moves downwards. It is the true reason to make the FSW process continue successfully. It seems that there exists a swirl of material flow on the advancing side. The residual stress distribution is a double-feature curve. It is also shown that there exists a good correlation between the equivalent plastic strain distribution and the distribution of the microstructure zones in the weld.
