Abstract:Ocean pipes are extensively employed for the developments of ocean resources such as oil/gas, manganese nodule, drinking waters, etc. Due to the shortage of natural resources in shallow and medium water depths, ocean developments move to much deeper waters and ultra long pipes will be increasingly used. In the case of shallow or medium water depths, lateral vibrations of ocean pipes are import but in ultra deep waters, axial vibrations play more important role. In this research, the nonlinear axial vibrations of ultra long ocean pipes with a heavy buffer at the bottom end are analytically solved. The analytical results are compared with numerical ones. Since the tangential fluid damping coefficient of ocean pipes is very small, dynamic axial response of an ultra long pipe can be very large at a resonant condition. Structural damping force and a buffer can play a role in limiting the axial response of the pipe. In the paper, the effects of fluid and structural damping on axial vibrations of an ultra long ocean pipes are analytically examined. The effects of the buffer inertia and non-linear fluid drag forces on the pipe tension and displacement variations are also investigated. ? 2010 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).
