Time-domain numerical study on a three dimensional body undergoing large-amplitude motions in waves

Abstract:Based on body nonlinear theory, the hydrodynamic problems of a three-dimensional body undergoing large amplitude motions are studied in the time domain. In the present method, the exact body boundary condition is satisfied on the instantaneous wetted surface while the free surface boundary condition is linearized. The initial-boundary value problem is formulated using a time-domain Green function. A "Time-frequency Transform Method" is proposed to calculate the convolution involving time-domain Green function. Numerical computations are first carried out for a submerged sphere undergoing forced motions. The results are compared with the published solutions, which validate the numerical model. Further computations are performed for a mooring JIP Spar in bichromatic waves. The body nonlinear effects on the results are discussed by comparison with linear time-domain solutions.
