Abstract:As the inherent nature of structures, their strain modes can be analyzed and processed for status information as well as existence of damages. Strain modal analysis was used to estimate the stress distribution of composite plate and metal barrel structures under free vibration. The damage status of composite plate and metal barrel structures with single damage or multi-damage was tried to estimate using a method of damage identification based on strain modal analysis. With the help of ANSYS, damage indicators with data from modal analysis of structures were built to judge whether damages exist or not. Meanwhile, the effect of different damage indicators and different order of strain modes were studied. The result demonstrates that damages on the structures can be identified using the proposed method in simple cases, and only low order modes are needed, which is convenient to be used in reality. And different damage indicators have surely great influence on effect of damage identification. Lastly, a proper damage indicator should be built for a different type of structure.
