Abstract:Under axial impact, bamboo node-type local buckling for cylindrical shells occurs and the buckling phenomenon is investigated and reported in detail. The Hopkinson-type device is simulated where the impact on shell is created by an elastic bar. Three types of buckling are possible, compression buckling, openning-type buckling and bamboo node-type buckling. The result shows that the key reason of the bamboo node-type is the pulse magnitude, which is created by propagation, reflection and transmission of axial waves along the axial direction of shell. The appearance of such buckling phenomenon rests with the impact velocity and geometrical sizes of the bar.
