Abstract: A single piezoelectric ceramic element simultaneously functionsas both a sensor and an actuator. A piezoelectric self-sensing actuator (SSA) is realized based on a strain rate bridge circuit that separates the strain rate signal from the control voltage. A simple controller consisting of a proportional and a phase lag compensation is designed in view of that the bridge is slightly unbalanced. Experimental results show that SSA can not only be a vibration detector but also has good performance in vibration control of a cantilever beam.
