Abstract: Minor addition of Sb in Ni8Nb5 alloy was shown to improve the glass-forming abilities of the base alloy, and 3 mm diameter glassy rods could be cast with 0.2-1.0 at.% Sb with good reproducibility. The thermal stability and the crystallization mode of the Ni8Nb5 glass remained unchanged, but the liquidus temperature was markedly depressed by Sb minor-alloying. The BMGs were very strong but brittle under compression. The results are discussed by assuming icosahedral short-range order in their undercooled liquids and glassy states. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
