Abstract: Identification procedure is proposed to determine contaminant sources of groundwater and mechanical parameters of soils by using ant colony algorithm. The relation of the contaminant sources of groundwater and the dispersion coefficient with observed data is performed to do parameter identification. In order to identify parameters efficiently and in a robust manner, the heuristic ant colony optimization is proposed. The numerical computation shows that the ant colony optimization can effectively determine the strength of pollution source and dispersion coefficients. The identification procedure can supply model parameters and boundary conditions for the numerical simulation of groundwater flow, which will reasonably evaluate and forecast the engineering effects for preventing groundwater pollution and could make forecasting results have practicability and objectivity. © 2008 Binary Information Press.
