Abstract:A AgZnCuMnNi filler metal is applied to join polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) onto a cemented carbide substrate , using brazing temperature 690 ℃ and different holding time . The microstructure and phase composition of joints are investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy , electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction . The thermal damage layer of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is also observed using scanning electron microscopy ,while the bond strength of joints is determined by shear testing . The microstructural investigations reveal that Ag(s .s) ,Cu(s .s) ,Cu0 .64 Zn0 .36 and a small amount of MnNi phases appear at the joint interface .The max shear strength of 350 .6 MPa is determined in samples joined at 15 s ,which is partially due to dispersion strengthening of gray-black grains which contain Cu(s .s) ,Cu0 .64 Zn0 .36 and MnNi phases in the joints .Equal-area-circle grain diameter of the gray-black grains grows with longer holding time , whereas the shear strength decreases because of the formation of continuous intermetallic compounds layer along the joint boundary .In addition ,the thermal damage of the PCD layer deteriorates with the increasing of holding time ,and shorter holding time is preferable in the production .
