Abstract:Calcium carbonate whisker was incorporated to strengthen and toughen the high strength cement-based composite materials. Flexural tensile strength, split tensile strength and work of fracture were measured. It is concluded that the addition of whiskers was advantageous to the tensile properties and toughness of high strength cement-based composite materials. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were whisker-cement coalition debonding, whisker peeling, crack deflection, crack bridging and whisker impact breakage.
