Abstract:Biodegradation is an effective way to remove polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from contaminated soils. Major ways, present situation and application of biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls are reviewed. Features and applied areas of aerobic oxidation, anaerobic reductive and sequential anaerobic-aerobic biodegradation are introduced. Aerobic biodegradation strains, oxidation mechanism and degradation pathway are discussed. It's pointed out that low efficiency of biodegradation is a major limiting factor affecting bioremediation of PCBs. Selection of high efficiency strains, kinetics of biodegradation and integration of some remediation ways are suggested for further study.
