Abstract:Fracture mechanics provide a reliable approach for describing the transformation of intact ice material into broken and fragmented ice by crack growth. In this work, fracture toughness experiments of natural Yellow River ice were performed with a Brazilian disk method. Physical test results showed that the Brazilian disk test method can be used to determine the fracture toughness and tensile strength of Yellow River ice. With the strain rate increased, the fracture toughness tended to decrease. As the temperature decreased, the fracture toughness tended to increase. In addition, the tensile strength under different temperatures and strain rates was analyzed. The obtained material parameters of Yellow River ice can be used to estimate the fracture strength of Yellow River ice.
