Abstract:The effect of the low energy high current pulsed electron beam (LEHCPEB) surface treatment on the microstructure and properties of a near alpha Ti alloy have been investigated. Both the melted layer and solid state transformation layer of the LEHCPEB treated samples contained alpha' martensite. The size of the former beta grains suggests a cooling rate of about 10(7) Ks(-1). Selective Al evaporation occurred at the top surface of the melted layer and affected both surface hardness and corrosion properties. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
