Abstract:Metamorphic waste can cause much damage to the environment and so the partial substitution of Portland cement with metamorphic rock waste to produce environmentally-friendly cement/concrete has been suggested. In the present study, the pozzolanic reactivity of metamorphic rock waste was investigated and the possibility of the partial replacement of Portland cement blended with rock waste powder was analysed. The results indicate that the compressive strengths of mortar containing slate waste at both early age and after 28 days were generally increased as the slate ratio increased up to at least 15% replacement. The dry shrinkage of mortar with or without rock powder was measured from 3 days up to 56 days. The results show that the replacement of Portland cement with 15% rock waste yielded high pozzolannic reactivity, cost advantages and environmental benefits as a green material.
