Abstract: A novel metal-free "black dye'' was designed and synthesized for panchromatic dye-sensitized solar cells. Based on this dye, the broader incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency spectrum was obtained over the whole visible range extending into the near-IR region up to 920 nm.
