Abstract:In order to apply vacuum circuit breakers to higher voltage, the research of multiple-break vacuum circuit breaker has become a hot issue in the high voltage switch industry. Based on the analysis of previous work, a 126 kV VCB with triple breaks based on fiber-controlled vacuum interrupter modules (FCVIMs) in series is presented. An FCVIM is composed of its own outer insulation, vacuum interrupter, permanent magnetic actuator with its controller and power supply. In order to apply a VCB with multiple breaks to higher voltages, the fiber-controlled vacuum interrupter module can be placed in series just like the building blocks. The fiber-controlled technology is used to control the modules at the low voltage area while permanent magnetic actuator operates at the high voltage area. Dielectric insulation experiments were carried out on the FCVIM and the VCB with triple breaks based on FCVIMs in series under lightning impulse voltage. Results show that the breakdown voltage improvement factor of 126 kV VCB with three breaks in series is 1.59 higher than VCB with single break. Moreover, the transient voltage distribution of VCB with triple breaks under situation of different grading capacitors and unsynchronized action among three breaks were tested. The results show that the breaking capacity can be effectively improved with the application of grading capacitors and low dispersion actuator. The VCB with three breaks can interrupt 40 kA short circuit current at the rated voltage and perform the reclosing operation under different test modes.
