DESIGN AND APPLICATION OF FBG STRAIN SENSOR IN THE STRUCTURE HEALTH MONITORING OF BRIDGE

Abstract:Accurate measurement of stress variation and effective prediction of failure within bridges under construction have been a major objective for strain sensor in the structure health monitoring of bridges. In this paper, a FBG strain sensor with enhanced sensitivity and packaged by two gripper tubes is presented and applied in the construction stress monitoring of a high speed railway bridge. This paper discusses the principle of FBG strain sensor of enhanced sensitivity. Calibration experiments and reliability tests were conducted to evaluate the sensor's strain transferring characteristics on plates of different materials. This paper also investigates the applicability of FBG strain sensors in the construction stress and safety monitoring of a high speed railway bridge. Results of the FBG strain sensors demonstrating promising potential in stress and failure in the bridge prove that this FBG strain sensor has the advantages of small size, high precision and embed ability.
