Abstract:Copper(I) complexes, [Cu(2)Cl(2)(phen)](infinity) (1; phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline), [Cu(2)(SCN)(CN)(phen)(2)](infinity) (2), and [Cu(SCN)(bipy)](infinity) (3; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized by hydrothermal reduction with tartaric acid as reducing reagent. Compound 1 exhibits mu(2)-Cl and mu(3)-Cl modes that construct unique Cu(3)Cl(3) six-membered ring units, which form a one-dimensional infinite chain structure by sharing common edges. Alternating CN(-) and SCN(-) ligands bridge Cu atoms to form an infinite helical chain in compound 2. Compound 3 consists of an infinite split-stair chain formed by [Cu(bipy)](+) unit joined by SCN- groups. The IR spectra and luminescence and thermal properties of 1 and 3 were investigated at room temperature in the solid state.
