The purpose of this editorial is to introduce the necessity of implementing a cleaner production (CP) strategy in order to achieve sustainable development for China's industries. CP technology, an effective way to reduce waste emission and conserve resources, has been widely employed in the pharmaceutical industry in developed countries. Such technologies have also been applied in a number of factories in China. These methods CP incorporated in the process design, reforming present production technologies, updating the production equipment, exploiting new producing flowcharts, using cleaner energy, building recycling into the manufacturing process, recycling waste, enhancing management, developing environmental protection technology, and ensuring satisfactory end-of pipe disposal. The editorial also summarizes the history of the development of CP in China, the existing problems with CP, and the future direction of CP. This article contributes to the general discussion on sustainability and "green" practices started in Environmental Forensics by the editor.
