Abstract: The Michael addition of 3-substituted oxindoles to nitroolefins was catalyzed by a novel tartrate-derived guanidine in high yield with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity. This method showed an extraordinarily broad substrate scope in terms of both reaction partners.
