Abstract:CO2 Geological sequestration is the preferred method in terms of large-scale deployment because of the abundant and potential storage capacity. The trapping of a non-wetting phase in a porous medium as discontinuous pore-scale clusters by capillary forces, or capillary trapping, has been studied extensively, as it is a fast and secure method of storing CO2 in porous media. This paper introduced the mechanism of capillary trapping and provided a perspective on the progress of the relevant research on capillary trapping. Meanwhile, we summarized the factors influencing the capillary trapping in the following aspects, capillary pressure, saturation variations, hysteresis effect and petrophysical properties. Finally, the review offered an attempt to facilitate the development of solutions for practical capillary trapping problems.
