Seismic damage monitoring of high concrete dams with embedded PZT sensor network

Abstract:Seismic damage detection of concrete dams has always attracted much attention in hydraulic structure community. In this paper, amethod was proposed to perform seismic damage monitoring for concrete dams by using embedded PZT sensor network.As its importance in achieving the dam damage detection, the arrangement ofdistributedPZT sensor networkwas introduced in detail. A dam model system with a distributed PZT sensor networkwasusedasan object for verification. A shaking table is used to simulate the earthquake groundmotion for the testing object. Theseismic damage detection system is used not only for performing the seismic damage process monitoring by measuring the dynamic stress history but also for distributed detecting of the dam damaged region. By analyzing the sensor signals, the emergence and development of thestructuraldamagescan bemonitored timely .A damage index matrix is presented to evaluate the damage status of the dam in different paths.
