Abstract:The high speed machining experiments of AISI 1045 hardened steel have been carried out. The influence of material hardness and cutting conditions on formation and development of serrated chip and adiabatic shear band has been observed and discussed. Results show that higher material hardness leads to higher degree of the serrated chip deformation localization and is favorable for the formation of transformed band. Decreasing tool rake angle and increasing cutting speed are helpful to the formation of transformed band as well as intensify the degree of chip deformation. The increasing of cutting thickness can not obviously influence on serrated chip formation. ? 2010 IEEE.
