Abstract: Let V a(a) (S) W be a Heegaard splitting of M, such that a, M = a,_W = F (1) a(a) F (2) and g(S) = 2g(F (1)) = 2g(F (2)). Let V* a(a) (S*) W* be the self-amalgamation of V a(a) (S) W. We show if d(S) a (c) 3/4 3 then S* is not a topologically minimal surface.
