Abstract:The welding of AZ91 magnesium alloy was carried out using hybrid welding. The relationships between the microstructures and corrosion behaviours of AZ91 magnesium alloy weldments were investigated. The microstructure was examined using optical microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition to the salt solution immersion test, potentiodynamic polarisations measurements were used to estimate the corrosion behaviours of welded sheets. The results showed that the highest corrosion susceptibility was noticed in the heat affected zone, whereas the best corrosion resistance in NaCl solution was in the fusion zone. The weld process affected both the microstructure and the corrosion behaviour of magnesium alloy. These results could be explained by the effects of the welding process on microstructures of AZ91 magnesium alloy sheet such as grain refinement and phase transformations.
