Abstract: For energy-based seismic design, hysteretic energy can be used for evaluating damage of buildings, in which establishment of simple and accurate procedure for estimating energy demands is the key point. In this paper, the energy balance equation of buildings is expanded, based on the equivalent SDOF system assumption, and the relation equation of seismic hysteretic energy between multi-storey buildings and equivalent SDOF systems is derived. According to the derivation of energy balance equation, a methodology for estimating total hysteretic energy of buildings is proposed and the formula for estimating distribution of hysteretic energy along stories is presented. An example is provided, in which three kinds of soil site are considered and corresponding earthquake records are used to verify the methods. The analytical results show that: (1) the method for estimating the total hysteretic energy is suitable for hard soil site, but it is unsuitable for the other sites; (2) the method for estimating the distribution of hysteretic energy is available for obtaining the tendency of distribution of hysteretic energy along stories and finding out the weakest storey of buildings subjected to earthquake motions. ? 2012 ASCE.
